Aphrodisias, located in southwestern Turkey, was a prominent city known for its marble sculpture production and its close relationship with the goddess Aphrodite. Dating back to the early 2nd century BC, the city thrived during Roman rule, enjoying special tax-free privileges and emerging as a hub of artistic innovation. At the heart of Aphrodisias was the revered cult of Aphrodite, embodied by a unique cult statue blending local Anatolian and Hellenic influences. This cultural significance, coupled with the city's proximity to marble quarries, fueled its reputation as a premier center for sculpture craftsmanship.
Aphrodisias's artistic legacy earned it the esteemed status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Notably, the city held a special place in the affections of Emperor Augustus, who regarded it as his favorite city in Asia. The combination of artistic prowess, divine reverence, and imperial favor solidified Aphrodisias's standing as a beacon of artistry and culture in the Roman world.
